3FL Notes: 2021 Draft Analysis

Eleven of our twelve teams were represented during the online draft on Thursday night. Here is an analysis of the results (in draft order):

1. Renegades: Hmm. Coach Val was awarded the Best Draft this year despite being given a B on the official draft report card. Her team looks solid but her RBs better stay healthy. Grade: B (Yahoo! Grade: B)

2. Stiletto Stompers: The Stompers earned the highest grade in the league from Yahoo! and are the preseason favorite to win it all. I have to agree–there aren't many holes in this lineup. Grade: A- (Yahoo! Grade: A-)

3. Yuengling Brewers: Derrick Henry, DK Metcalf and Lamar Jackson on the same team? Look out for the Brew Crew this season. This group is way better than Yahoo! thinks. Grade: B+ (Yahoo! Grade: C+)

4. Baltimorons: The QB room is full for the 'Morons. There are 3 signal callers on the roster but there is a reason to be concerned about each one of them. But there are also a few sleepers on this team so you never know. Grade: B- (Yahoo! Grade: C)

5. Dumbbums: Top talent is represented at QB, WR and RB, but there are also a couple of rookies on this team. They might make or break the 'Bums season. Grade: B- (Yahoo! Grade: C)

6. Lightning: This is a strong squad. They have a dynamic QB and a solid backfield. Just have to hope for the best with the WR corps. Grade: B (Yahoo! Grade: B)

7. Phys. Ed. Phenoms: PEP put together some great offensive power but left the QB position to a couple of young guys. But if one of them steps up then watch out. Grade: B- (Yahoo! Grade: C)

8. Misfits, Inc.: The autodraft was not amazing for the Corporation this year, but they did get a better Kicker and Defense than if they were sitting in front of a computer. Grade: B (Yahoo! Grade: C+)

9. the HAW: From first to worst? The CAPS were awarded our Best Draft last year but they're at the very bottom of the list this time around. I would argue about it but take a look at those graphs. Grade: B- (Yahoo! Grade: C)

10. Marauders: It's Dak and the kids for Coach Hoss this year. He drafted 3 rookies and 2 second year players, and if they live up to the hype then big things might be in the works. Grade: A- (Yahoo! Grade: B)

11. Predacons: Wasn't this going to be the draft that the Preds finally did something different than RB/RB at the beginning and taking a QB too late? They ended up doing both. But their fate will mostly depend on Saquan's performance. Grade: B (Yahoo! Grade: B)

12: Spiked Vipers: SpiVi will begin their title defense with the best QB and TE in the league. Plus 2 other TEs for some reason. Their draft strategies might be unorthodox, but they've also scored the most points ever in a 3FL season. Grade: B+ (Yahoo! Grade: B)

The Comm-nosticator makes his first predictions soon. Stay tuned.

3FL 2021 Update | Last Minute Changes

Our draft is coming up soon but I wanted to let everyone know about a few last minute changes to the 3FL as we start our third decade.

We voted to keep a 13 game regular season, but it turns out that the NFL has pushed bye weeks all the way into week 14 of their schedule. This would put our playoff semifinal teams at risk of having to rely on bye week fill-ins in the first week of the postseason. That seems like a bit of an unfair draw. So we're going to expand our regular season to 14 games.

With this change also comes the contraction of divisions from four to three. It makes sense to still play your divisional foes twice and everyone else once, and three divisions will allow us to keep that schedule structure. We're using the same draft order from our annual meeting so we'll have the following divisions for 2021:

EAST
Renegades, Baltimorons, Phys. Ed. Phenoms, Marauders

WEST
Stiletto Stompers, Dumbbums, Misfits, Inc., Predacons

NORTH
Yuengling Brewers, Lightning, the HAW, Spiked Vipers

Since we're changing things at the core of the league it makes sense to also implement any other changes at the same time. The threshold for rules modifications has historically been 60% of the votes, but we're going to enact the two questionnaire items from this season that reached a simple majority.

So we're replacing a WR spot with a FLEX position (WR/RB/TE), and kicker points will now be tiered based on distance (3, 3, 3, 4, 5). A missed kick from more than 50 yards is now worth -1.

It should be an interesting start to our third decade of fantasy football. Good luck this season!

SuperBowl XX Champion!

Congratulations to Coach Nick on winning his second 3FL championship!

The Spiked Vipers had an incredible week to cap their amazing year. In the SuperBowl they set new records for most points by a player in one week, most points during the three weeks of a playoff run and most team points in a game (by 40 points!). In fact, SpiVi scored more points this week than the combined (both teams) point totals in 17 of our 19 previous SuperBowls.

Stay tuned later in the week for final stats and the 2020 season wrap-up.

Happy holidays and thanks to everyone for a fun season and 20 great years!!

3FL Notes: S20: Week 16 (SuperBowl) Preview

It was another high flying playoff week in the 3FL! Our semifinals jumped ahead of last week's total and became the new second highest scoring postseason week of all time. Five of our eight teams ended up with more than 100 points.

There are games across four straight days this SuperBowl week, starting with the Vikings/Saints matchup on Christmas afternoon (Friday) and stretching all the way until Monday night. There are six NFL games outside of the usual Sunday afternoon time slots. Make sure your team is ready!

Week 15 Recap

Top Scoring 3FL Team: the HAW - 120 points

Player MVPs:
Jalen Hurts (QB/Phi/P) - 36 points
Josh Allen (QB/Buf/MI) - 34 points
Kyler Murray (QB/Ari/tH) - 30 points

Playoff Predictions Tally

Yahoo! Projections: 4/8 - 50%

Week 16 Information
Christmas Afternoon: Minnesota Vikings @ New Orleans Saints
Saturday Early: Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Detroit Lions
Saturday Late: San Francisco 49ers @ Arizona Cardinals
Saturday Night: Miami Dolphins @ Las Vegas Raiders
Sunday Night: Tennessee Titans @ Green Bay Packers
Monday Night: Buffalo Bills @ New England Patriots

It's SuperBowl week in the 3FL!

For 7th Place:
#2 Misfits, Inc. vs. #4 Dumbbums
As the Steelers fate has gone recently, so too has that of the 'Bums. They scored only 43 points last week and had to watch as their players from Pittsburgh sat out, got injured or threw the ball to nobody in particular. It might not be any better for them this week, as FitzCorp will lean on starts Derrick Henry and Josh Allen to not end up in the last place of the playoffs.

For 5th Place:
#6 the HAW vs. #8 Renegades
Both of these teams rebounded in week 15 and scored above the century mark. I mean, they were our league's second and third place scorers for the entire regular season, so that makes sense. It's just a week too late. But it does set up a great matchup to win the consolation bracket. Kyler Murray might be the difference as half of the players in this game will take the field before Sunday.

For 3rd Place:
#5 Marauders vs. #7 Phys. Ed. Phenoms
The Phenoms were the story of the second half of the season, rising from last place into the 7th seed and carrying that momentum all the way into the semifinals, where they scored 100+ points. But now they end up in a battle for the bronze digital trophy against Coach Hoss, who watched his team take the 5th seed but have to roll with six Qs on the roster. And unfortunately they'll add a D for this week. Ouch.

3FL SuperBowl XX
#1 Spiked Vipers vs. #3 Predacons
It was pretty much a given that SpiVi would end up in the SuperBowl this year. They set the record for most points ever scored in a regular season, recorded double digit wins and advanced to the postseason as the top seed. Since then they have scored the second most points in a playoff week and are on track to score the most points in a playoff run in our history. The Predacons took their division and qualified early, but only since week 13 have they been a true contender. In fact, these two teams have scored more points in the last three weeks than any other teams in the league.

Can they keep it up for one more important game? Will the Vipers cruise to their second championship with yet another record setting performance? Or will the Predacons surprise everyone (and get a little help from the curse) to earn their first ever SuperBowl victory in their fifth appearance in the big game? SpiVi's last loss came against the Preds in week nine so Coach Sinkerbeam owns the tiebreaker.

It's looking like a great matchup, and it will be a marathon holiday weekend with at least one player scheduled in all seven NFL timeslots.

Good luck this week!

Merry Christmas and thanks to everyone for another great season!!

3FL Notes: S20: Week 15 (Semifinals) Preview

For the first time in our history all of the odd numbered seeds advanced to the semifinals. Seems appropriate for 2020. It ended up as our second highest scoring playoff week ever and three of the four winning teams scored more than 100 points.

All individual team pages (see links on the sidebar) and the 3FL Records have been updated and show statistics through the end of the 2020 regular season. This year's additions to the records page are in bold. Through 1,578 regular season games we have scored a combined 210,101 points.

Fun fact: After 20 years of the 3FL, Coach Drew and Coach Nick have the exact same regular season W/L/T record (129/127/7), but Coach Drew has scored two (just 2!) more total points. That's a one point differential per decade. Crazy!

Don't forget, the four teams still in the championship bracket will have only one player add available this week. And there are two Saturday games in addition to Thursday, Sunday and Monday nights.

Week 14 Recap

Top Scoring 3FL Team: Spiked Vipers - 133 points (2nd, playoffs all-time)

Player MVPs:
Derrick Henry (RB/Ten/MI) - 33 points
Aaron Rodgers (QB/GB/SV) - 30 points
Jonathan Taylor (RB/Ind/SV) - 28 points

Playoff Predictions Tally

Yahoo! Projections: 1/4 - 25%

Week 15 Information

Thursday Night: Los Angeles Chargers @ Las Vegas Raiders
Saturday Afternoon: Buffalo Bills @ Denver Broncos
Saturday Night: Carolina Panthers @ Green Bay Packers
Sunday Night: Cleveland Browns @ New York Giants
Monday Night: Pittsburgh Steelers @ Cincinnati Bengals

Semifinal Games
(Winners play in 3FL SuperBowl XX, losers play for 3rd Place)

#1 Spiked Vipers vs. #5 Marauders
Another week, another record book addition for SpiVi. This time it's the second best playoff weekly score of all time. They've been putting up so many points that even the curse might be apprehensive to take them on. The Marauders have quietly found themselves in the semis, but this game would be a lot more competitive if they didn't have six players who are questionable for this weekend. The Vipers have only one Q. Look out (again), 3FL records.

#3 Predacons vs. #7 Phys. Ed. Phenoms
It wasn't looking great for PEP after a late RB scratch and a 20+ point deficit following the Sunday night Bills/Steelers game. But an amazing MNF comeback gave them an upset victory and a chance to face the Preds. Coach Sinkerbeam's team advanced with little drama, and this matchup means that one of our teams without their name on the trophy will get a shot at a championship next week. That team will be the one who makes the correct lineup decisions, starting with tonight's game.

Consolation Games
(Winners play for 5th Place, losers play for 7th)

#2 Misfits, Inc. vs. #6 the HAW
It's a shame that this game is in the consolation bracket because it's looking like our best matchup of the week. Things are even across the board, but Derrick Henry may be the key to victory for FitzCorp. Can he put up 30+ points again? And will the CAPS' WRs return to form after a tough quarterfinals game? There are players in the first five time slots but we'll have a winner decided by 7:30pm on Sunday.

#4 Dumbbums vs. #8 Renegades
These two were our lowest scoring teams from last week, so it's fitting that they meet here. The 'Bums had every player except one perform lower than their projections – and that one player is now on the COVID list for this week. The Renegades ended up almost twenty points under their projected total. Not that it really mattered as they could have scored 65 more points and not won against the record setting Vipers. Still, this sets up to be an exciting game and it will all come down to the Steelers on MNF.

Good luck this week. The SuperBowl awaits!
